New Delhi: Rice production in India, the world's largest producer, is expected to decline by 5 per cent to 99 million tonnes, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has said.
The country had produced a record 104.31 million tonne rice in the 2011-12 crop year (July-June).
"India's 2012-13 rice crop was raised 1 million tonne to 99 million tonne, based on a higher yield. The crop is still 5 per cent below the year-earlier record," USDA said in its latest report.
Late-season monsoon rains in Eastern and Northeastern rice areas in August and September were quite favourable for the kharif crop, with the Government's First Advance Estimate pegging the kharif (summer) crop at 85.6 million tonne, it added.
In August, United Nation's body Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had tentatively pegged India's rice output at 98.5 million tonne due to late onset of monsoon rains leading to deficit in key northern and southern growing areas.
USDA has forecast global rice output at a record 465.1 million tonne in 2012-13, which is marginally above the output achieved in 2011-12 at 464.9 million tonne.
The average global yield is forecast at a record 4.37 tonne per hectare, fractionally above 2011-12.
