CHENNAI: Tyre manufacturer major Apollo today said it proposes to set up a coal-based thermal power plant at its facility at nearby Oragadam.
The proposed plant is being planned to manage power requirements at the facility.
"The 2x7.5 MW coal-based thermal power plant would be set up on an area of 2.47 acre within the (existing) plant. This would help the company become self-sufficient for its power requirements for critical equipments", a company statement said.
The plant would improve the overall efficiency of the facility and reduce pollution. To further increase efficiency and reduce consumption of water, the plant would have air-cooled condensers, it said.
Noting that the company was waiting for "environmental clearance" from Centre, the statement said a public-hearing on the subject is scheduled to be held at the plant on December 5.
A company spokesperson said the public hearing was part of obtaining the approval process from the Central government.
He declined to reveal figures on investments to set up the plant, saying "it is part of Rs 2,100 crore investments as announced earlier."
Apollo Tyres has an installed capacity to produce 550 tonnes of passenger vehicle and truck-bus radial tyres per day, the statement added.
