Oilmeal exports down 24% in April-September this fiscal

NEW DELHI: India's oilmeal exports fell by 24 per cent to 16.03 lakh tonnes in the first half of this fiscal due to lower import from Iran and lack of export parity, an industry body said.

The country had shipped 20.97 lakh tonnes of oilmeals, that is primarily used as cattle and poultry feed, in the April-September period of 2011-12 fiscal, Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors Association of India (SEA) said in a statement.

"High price of soybean seed resulted into lesser crushing and availability of soybean meal for local as well as for the export. Lack of buying by Iran and disparity in export of soybean meal due to high price in local market resulted into steep fall in its exports," SEA added.

In April-September of 2012-13 fiscal, Iran imported 4.57 lakh tonnes of oilmeals compared to 1.50 lakh tonnes in the same period of the last fiscal. It had emerged as the highest importer of Indian oilmeals in the first five months in this fiscal.

During the April-August period of 2012-13, Iran's import of oilmeals from India jumped nearly four times at 4.56 lakh tonnes of oilmeals against 1.18 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period.

Oilmeal exports fell by 64 per cent to 1.44 lakh tonnes last month from 4.03 lakh tonnes in September 2011.

South Korea has emerged at the highest importer of oilmeals from India. In April-September period of this fiscal, the country imported 4.59 lakh tonnes compared to 3.39 lakh tonnes in the year-ago period, SEA said.

South Korea was followed by Iran, Vietnam, Japan, Thailand, Indonesia, Europe, among others, it added.
