New Mangalore Port handles largest consignment of timber logs

The New Mangalore Port has handled the largest consignment of around 22,000 tonnes of timber logs from a single ship.

A press release by D. Mahadevaiah, Traffic Manager in-charge of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT), said here on Wednesday that the vessel — m.v. Niamul Mowla with 19,673 pieces of timber logs weighing around 22,000 tonnes — called at the port on September 3.

This is the first largest consignment of timber logs received and handled at the port, he said.

The entire consignment was loaded from Port of Yangon in Myanmar. Around 90 consignees located in Karnataka, Kerala and Maharashtra imported this consignment, he said.

After unloading, the vessel is expected to sail out on September 15. Dix Shipping is the stevedores and steamer agents of the vessel, and Export Trade Links and Sri Ganesh Shipping Agency, are the clearing and forwarding agents.

Quoting P. Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, the release said the port is making all efforts for attracting traditional cargo such as timber by providing infrastructure required for the smooth handling of such bulk cargo. During 2011-12, the port handled 2.96 lakh tonnes of timber logs, against 1.87 lakh tonnes handled during the previous fiscal, registering a growth of 58 per cent.

Referring the recent visit of a delegation from the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce, Kannur, Tamilvanan said the delegation has assured to move cargo like timber, edible oil, plywood, textiles and scrapgenerated from Malabar region through New Mangalore Port.
